The first self-driving semi just hit the road. Designed by Otto this semi wanted to haul for a major company so it of course went to Budweiser. This truck carried a load of 2,300 cases of beer from Fort Collins, to Colorado around pikes peak. For around 125 miles of that trip this truck was driverless, the driver only doing any actual driving when it reached a town or city. Let’s imagine a driver on the road for days on end, looks to his left and sees a 53 foot trailer filled with precious cargo and only to see, no driver. This would be a bit unsettling for me to see, just to know that no human is not in control of that giant truck.
As of right now Otto's design only allows the driver to access the self-driver mode on major highways or interstates. The driver will need to take over when the truck reaches normal roads or cities. So one can’t really just take a nap for the whole ride, which is unfortunate. Luckily Otto plans to release a truck that will have true self-driving features in the months to come. Otto’s initial plan was to show the rest of the trucking industry how Otto can help major trucking companies, such as Budweiser.
Trucking industry advocates are still worried about the trucks ability to determine the roads many dangers at highway speeds. Otto was founded by google and bought for $670 million by Uber. This company is a very very futuristic company, but who knows maybe the future is coming faster than we think. The idea behind Otto is to allow the nations 350,000 truckers faster than with a human driver. Overall safety is still the number one concern for truckers across the nation.
I think that it is a good overall idea, just is it really all that safe? In the U.S most of our stores, receive their goods from truck is time really worth the safety? I don’t believe it is worth it, and the lives of the drivers that have to ride alone to sign the papers once the truck reaches the destination. I think the idea is good but the risk is not worth an hour or a few minutes. I don’t decide how the world is ran, if I did there are a few things that would be different but this is just my option.
