How soon will this be happening? Very soon, GM has not decided on a firm date, but they are hoping by the end of the decade, 2018-2019. Most of the cars we buy today contribute to this project. It has become one of the main focuses of car brands all over the U.S. Each brand is trying to get done faster than the others, but still, make it better. It is becoming a race between them all, who will get done first?
So the next car I buy will drive itself? Not exactly, this car will not do everything itself and to some of us, that is a relief. We will still have to tell it where to go and get the car going and sorta like set the "cruise". It will depend on us a little for driving in difficult situations such as heavy road work, icy roads, snow, parking. So no the next car Americans buy will not drive its self entirely. Unless of course, we buy a car in 20 to 30 years and then maybe yes.
How does this car see the road? It will do way more than just see the road, using combinations of lasers, radar, cameras and GPS, this car will actually be able to see its surroundings. It will use a long range radar, which is more than 100 meters. This radar is housed in the grill of the car. It will be able to sense the car in front of you and brake accordingly. That is if all goes as it should.
I think this car could be good, could be bad. Do I think that this project should be rushed through to get done fast? No, something like this needs time and preparation to make its way through the world. People will not like this idea of giving up their driving freedom and I get that. I could not wait until the day I could drive and now that I can I can't imagine not driving.
